Best Optic For Scar 17 Reviews: A 2018 Buyers Guide

When your out hunting the last thing you want is to have to head home because it’s getting too dark.

Even worse is if you think you’ve spotted your prey, take your shot and then realize you’ve been mistaken and actually have shot another person.

An optic is one of the most necessary attachments any serious hunter can buy for better shooting, especially long range hunting. They address two key issues when hunting: safety and accuracy.

These accessories allow you to hunt at optimum times, keep your shots on target and increases the safety involved with hunting sports.

In this particular case I will help you choose optics for your Scar 17, which is one of the most widely-used rifles in the US Military and NATO. Scar 17s has many advantages over its brother, the Scar 16s. Mainly, they are much lighter and accurate than the 16s.

This rifle has a mag capacity of 10 or 20 rounds (though its round capacity can be expanded to a bigger magazine). With its standard 16-inch barrel, it can shoot nicely up to 600 yards. With a long barrel (a 20-inches barrel) you can get closer to the 1000 yard mark, as it can reach the 800 yards. You can use it at fully auto, or semi auto. Its semi-auto option is great for hunting.

But which one to buy?

The terminology around optics can be confusing and with the variety of options out there it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But they provide many necessary improvements for our pistol or battle rifle. I’ll help you to start your search and learn to choose the best optics for you to have an excellent hunting experience.

To make it easier I’ve given a brief overview of what sights do and what to look for when buying one for your arms.

In this blog post I’ve also reviewed the top 5 riflescopes for your FN SCAR 17 assault rifle that are currently on the market to help you pick the best one for you.

This choice will depend on what type of hunting you do, the guns you use and your own personal preference but I have to say I’ve slightly fallen in love with the Vortex Razor HD Gen II which for me, today, is the best optic for a Scar 17.

Why Do You Need a Good Optic?

Magnification

Each optic brings with it a different level of maximum magnification, the greater the magnification the easier it is to see your target and the more accurate your shot will be.

This feature does not only make it easier to shoot on target, it also makes hunting a much safer experience.

With a good magnification, it is easier to have a broader view and see clearly what’s behind your target and assess whether it really is a safe shot or not. This can be vital in ensuring you don’t accidentally hit a hiker.

Reduces Recoil Injuries

As magnification on a scope increases so does the eye relief factor. Without a scope, you expect some recoil after you fire. But a sight on your firearm reduces the risk of eye injuries occurring due to recoil after hitting the trigger.

Increasing Brightness and Visibility

A good sight will allow you to have a better hunting experience. Scopes harness and accentuate natural light to make the image you see as clear as possible, so it guarantees a big improvement when shooting with your weapon.

This makes it possible to hunt early in the morning and right before dark at night, times where otherwise visibility would be too low and it would be too hard for the shooter to fire precisely. These are the best times of the day for outdoor hunting but it is only possible to do so with the right scope.

Improved Aim

The crosshair or aimpoint are a fundamental part of a good quality scope. They’re a simple marking (usually a red dot) on the lens telling you exactly where your shot will hit, making it much easier to get your shot on target, improving your gun’s precision.

What Makes The Best Optics?

Lens Coating

Len’s can either be single or multi-coated. This reduces light diffraction and reflection, which results in a sharper, clearer image.
If you want the best of the best get a multi-coated lens.

Objective Lens

The objective lens varies in diameter depending on which one you get. If the diameter is bigger more light will come into your optic. This makes your field of vision bigger and makes it easier to hunt in low-level light conditions. These lenses do get heavier and heavier as they get bigger and can make weapons quite heavy so it’s worth asking yourself if you care more about weight or vision.

Scar 17s Optic Reviews

This is my list of what, in my opinion, are the group of the best 5 riflescopes that can be used with the FN Scar 17, developed by FN Herstal.

Here they are…

Vortex Viper PST 1-4×24 Riflescope by Vortex Optics

Vortex Optics Viper PST 1-4x24

Best value for money

Vortex is a well-known brand that never fails to impress with the quality of their products.

This is no exception. It’s awesome for some hunting action.

It has a decent magnification range of one to four times, allowing you to easily switch between them depending on the distance of your target. The objective lens is 24mm which is a nice size for letting enough light in without increasing the weight to dramatically.

What did we like about it?

The image that this produces is incredible. It has a multi-coated lens with extra-low dispersion glass and good optical system protection. This maximizes brightness and makes the image you see incredibly clear and crisp. I was very impressed with the final image you see using this.
It has an illuminated reticle that allows you to adjust the brightness of the environment. This makes hitting your target much easier in low light conditions. Its lenses have the ability to deliver image sharpness without much environmental light.
The reticle is actually etched into the glass making it incredibly durable and reliable. The reticle has large ring that is quite helpful for target acquisition.

Who’s it for?

This is for those that don’t want to spend a load of cash but still want a scope that has it all.

It’s cost is about 500 dollars so is cheaper than most of the others on my list but it manages to keep most of the functionality other scopes have while still being available for that low price.

Some other sweet features

This is made out of aircraft grade aluminum, which is well known for being strong, rigid and durable. It works nicely in every kind of terrain.

Built specifically to withstand wet conditions this performs very well and helps it to have a compact and attractive design for the customer. Not only is it waterproof but it also has argon gas injected into it to stop any internal fogging and it can be easily mounted on your gun.

It also has top-notch Illumination control, which is at the left side of the device.

Trijicon ACOG 3.5×35 Riflescope

Trijicon ACOG 3.5x35

Best Brand and Most Reliable

Trijicon has been leading the riflescope industry for the past 35 years in high-end advanced scopes for firearms.

In that time they have become well known for their innovative uses of tritium and advanced fiber-optics which automatically adjust brightness levels based on current lighting.

This is hands down the best brand in the industry they supply the United States marine corps, army, and special operations forces. As well as the US Government, state and local law enforcement and for personal defense. The only issue you may have with this ones are some slight problems with accuracy at long range.

If you are a hunting enthusiast you can’t go wrong buying Trijicon tools.

What did we like about it?

It’s literally been proved to be effective in combat scenarios. There’s no other optic that’s so widely and consistently been used by the USA military in battle and training.

The reticle has a dual illuminated crosshair with tritium and fiber optics. This means you don’t need battery and the brightness of the reticle will automatically adjust to the current levels of light.

When at 1x range you can use the scope with both of your eyes open. This reduces strain on your eyes which can be really handy during a long hunt.

If you adjust its 300 Blackout caliber reticle in 1/3 MOA increments you will have a greatly improved precision. Also, it’s precisely designed for the .308 round and considers the bullet drop as it has a BDC that shows the user where the specific holdover is for different ranges.

Who’s it for?

This is for people who want something they know they can count on. Not only is it designed by one of the most reputable brands on the scene they also give you a lifetime warranty. With that much belief in their product, you know it’s going to be good.

Some other sweet features

The housing is made from aluminum alloy, the same stuff they use on airplanes. This really is a damn rugged bit of kit. Also, it is completely battery free and waterproof up to 100 feet. Before you order it you can choose between many reticle variants of your liking.

Its online shipping package’s content includes a Flattop device for army-styled rail. It is widely-recommended to buy a LA Rue lt100 mount so the optic mounts nicely on your rifle.

The crosshair adjusts to enable bullet drop compensation. This increases your accuracy by a great deal and works up to an astonishing 1200 meters.

And can you resist that elegant black design?

Millet 6-25 x 56 LRS-1 Illuminated Side Focus Tactical Riflescope

 Millett 6-25 X 56 LRS-1

Best For Long Distances

This is a scope that’s been designed with the hunter in mind and it’s a perfect fit for all FN Scar 17s users. It offers loads of little features (you might want to read its full specs in the Amazon link I left before) that make it easier to use and minimize accidents.

One of the good things is the adjustments are all set to be stiff so that the settings don’t change by accident but, in general, are quite easy to handle.

If you are an experienced hunter that likes to have many attachments available and you are considering adding a new sight to your collection, this one is a must.

What I liked about it

The biggest pro is that the objective is a massive 56mm making the field of vision huge and the image bright. The clearness of the image and the level of brightness this creates is real handy.
The reticle is etched into the glass to ensure perfect placement and reduce the chance of fading.
The sight can be adjusted to take into account wind speeds and elevation which is extremely useful. Last but not least, it is waterproof which are good news if you are looking for great durability.

Who’s it for?

This is for those that like to stake out their prey from a distance. It’s in the top end of the market for a big length and long range shooting.

The price isn’t cheap, but if you don’t mind paying a bit extra you definitely get what you pay for here.

Some other sweet features

Has been built to be strong and reliable. This scope won’t break easily.
Has a focus knob conveniently placed on the side for ease of access
The accuracy this enables, even at extremely long distances is outstanding and remains reliable even over extended periods of use.
You also get some cool little extras that most other scopes don’t come with like heavy duty rings and flip up dust caps for the scope.

Millet Tactical BK81624 Designated Marksman DMS-2 1-6 x 24 mm Riflescope

Millett Tactical BK81624

Cheapest / Most Affordable

Millet dominates the offer in the cheaper end of the optics market. But don’t let this make you think they specialize in low-end gear that falls short in quality. This scope model, in particular, is cheap (around 300 dollars), so it’s awesome if you have a small budget, but still packs a hell of a punching power.

What did we like about it?

It has an illuminated reticle and is able to function in low light conditions. There are 11 different brightness adjustable settings so no matter the time of day you can still see your prey, so it definitely has the upper hand.
The optics have been multicoated which makes the image you see incredibly sharp and clear.
Often when buying a cheaper scope durability and the chance of it breaking on your first outing is a real problem. But here that is not the case at all. The craftsmanship is impeccable. It’s built to be rugged and will survive most extreme conditions when out on a hunt. So don’t be afraid of running through the woods and falling with this one.

Who’s it for?

If you don’t want to spend thousands, but still want a scope that’s going to deliver a clear bright image this could be the one for you.

It’s cheap, durable and has most of what any hunter requires.

The 24mm objective is surprisingly effective for its size, but in extreme low light conditions, it’s not going to keep up with one that’s 50% bigger which is it’s weakest point.

With a more expensive scope, you’ll get a higher objective and be able to hunt in lower light conditions. But if you want to save a good few hundred dollars, and don’t mind losing a bit of brightness, this is the one to get.

Some other sweet features

The magnification range is nice, going from 1x to 6x. When using on 1x you can keep both eyes open and still see your target clearly, very handy if you’re on a long hunt and don’t want to strain your eyes.
The reticle has already been calibrated to work with .223/5.56 ammunition, taking into account bullet drop over 500 yards.
30mm tube made out of high-quality aluminum. It’s simple to mount on your Scar.

Vortex Razor HD Gen II 1-6×24 Riflescope

Vortex Optics Razor HD Gen II 1-6x24

Most Durable and Clearest Picture

Another proper bad boy by Vortex here. They are clearly sending a message to the competition with their products. This is one of my favorites on this list. It has a lot of extras other scopes don’t have and the picture you see when looking through the scope is crystal clear.

What did we like about it?

Its lens is sweet. It’s an apochromatic lens which automatically adjusts itself to optimize the spectrum of light that you see which gives you great color accuracy. This stops glare that comes from bright lights and eliminates the distraction this otherwise causes.

The lens is also fully multi-coated with XR plus anti-reflective coating which helps regulate the brightness to keep it at the optimum level.

The image that you get through this lens is as clear as if you were actually stood that close to your target. This is down to the level of quality of the glass. It is high density with low dispersion ensuring you get the best quality that is physically possible.

There are 11 levels of illumination and it’s easy to select your favorite as there’s an off switch next to each one. So no clicking through to number 7 every time when you go out on a hunt, just flick it on.
The sight is stress-free on your eyes due to the eye box which has quick autofocusing and allows you to use both eyes when on single magnification.

Who’s it for?

If you want the best picture possible this is the one for you. The image could not be clearer and it performs fantastically in conditions where there is a low level of light.

This is a durable, high performance, bad ass attachment. If you’re looking for the best of the best look no further.

Some other sweet features

It’s extremely durable because the exterior casing acts as a layer of protection for all the interior parts. This combined with the O-ring seal and the fact that it has been purged with argon makes this almost indestructible. It’s waterproof, fog proof and will remain fully functional in the most intense conditions.
The lens is also scratch proof and protected from oil and dirt by an Armortek coating. With single piece aircraft-grade aluminum, this has been designed to never break.
The side dial illuminates when in use so that you can see the setting you are using no matter the light conditions that you’re in.
Mounting it onto the Scar 17 is very straightforward and easy.
