Best Optic For Scar 17 Reviews: A 2018 Buyers Guide

When your out hunting the last thing you want is to have to head home because it’s getting too dark.

Even worse is if you think you’ve spotted your prey, take your shot and then realize you’ve been mistaken and actually have shot another person.

An optic is one of the most necessary attachments any serious hunter can buy.

It allows you to hunt at optimum times, keep your shots on target and increases the safety involved with a hunt.

But which one to buy?

The terminology around optics can be confusing and with the variety of options out there it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

To make it easier I’ve given a brief overview of what optics do and what to look for when buying one.

I’ve also reviewed the top 5 riflescopes that are currently on the market to help you find the best one for you.

This will depend on what type of hunting you do and your own personal preference but I have to say I’ve slightly fallen in love with the Vortex Razor HD Gen II.

Why Do You Need a Good Optic?

Magnification

Each optic brings with it a different level of maximum magnification, the greater the magnification the easier it is to see your target.

Not only does this make it easier to keep your shot on target, it also makes hunting much safer.

With a good magnification, it is easier to see clearly what’s behind your target and assess whether it really is a safe shot or not. This can be vital in ensuring you don’t accidentally hit a hiker.

Reduces Recoil Injuries

As magnification on a scope increases so does the eye relief factor. This reduces the risk of eye injuries occurring due to recoil.

Increasing Brightness and Visibility

Scopes harness and accentuate natural light to make the image you see as clear as possible. This makes it possible to hunt early in the morning and right before dark, times where otherwise visibility would be too low. These are the best times of the day to hunt but it is only possible to do so with the right scope.

Improved Aim

Crosshairs and a fundamental part of a good quality scope. They’re a simple marking on the lens telling you exactly where your shot will hit, making it much easier to get your shot on target.

What Makes The Best Optics?

Lens Coating

Len’s can either be single or multi-coated. This reduces light diffraction and reflection, which results in a sharper, clearer image.
If you want the best of the best get a multi-coated lens.

Objective Lens

The objective lens varies in diameter depending on which one you get. If the diameter is bigger more light will come into your optic. This makes your field of vision bigger and makes it easier to hunt in low-level light conditions. These lenses do get heavier and heavier as they get bigger and can make weapons quite heavy so it’s worth asking yourself if you care more about weight or vision.

Here they are…

Vortex is a well-known brand that never fails to impress with the quality of what they produce.

This is no exception.

It has a decent magnification range of 1 to 4 times, allowing you to easily switch between them depending on the distance of your target. The objective lens is 24mm which is a nice size for letting enough light in without increasing the weight to dramatically.

The reticle is actually etched into the glass making it incredibly durable and reliable.

Who’s it for?

This is for those that don’t want to spend a load of cash but still want a scope that has it all.

It’s about 500 dollars so is cheaper than most of the others on my list but it manages to keep most of the functionality other scopes have while still being available for that low price.

Some other sweet features

This is made out of aircraft grade aluminum, which is well known for being strong, rigid and durable.
Built specifically to withstand wet conditions this performs very well. Not only is it waterproof but it also has argon gas injected into it to stop any internal fogging.

 Millett 6-25 X 56 LRS-1

Best For Long Distances

This is a scope that’s been designed with the hunter in mind. It has loads of little features that make it easier to use and minimize accidents.

One of the good things is the adjustments which are all set to be stiff so that the settings don’t get changed by accident.

What I liked about it

The objective is a massive 56mm making the field of vision huge and the image bright. The clearness of the image and the level of brightness this creates is real handy.
The reticle is etched into the glass to ensure perfect placement and reduce the chance of fading.
The sight can be adjusted to take into account wind speeds and elevation which is extremely useful.

Millet Tactical BK81624 Designated Marksman DMS-2 1-6 x 24 mm Riflescope

Millett Tactical BK81624

Cheapest / Most Affordable

Millet dominates the cheaper end of the optics market. But don’t let this make you think they specialize in low-end gear. This scope, in particular, is cheap (around 300 dollars), but still packs a hell of a punch.

What did we like about it?

It has an illuminated reticle and is able to function In low light conditions. There are 11 different brightness settings so no matter the time of day you can still see your prey.
The optics have been multicoated which makes the image you see incredibly sharp and clear.
Often when buying a cheaper scope durability and the chance of it breaking on your first outing is a real problem. But here that is not the case at all. The craftsmanship is impeccable. It’s built to be rugged and will survive most extreme conditions when out on a hunt.

Who’s it for?

If you don’t want to spend thousands, but still want a scope that’s going to deliver a clear bright image this could be the one for you.

It’s cheap, durable and has most of what any hunter requires.

The 24mm objective is surprisingly effective for its size, but in extreme low light conditions, it’s not going to keep up with one that’s 50% bigger.

With a more expensive scope, you’ll get a higher objective and be able to hunt in lower light conditions. But if you want to save a good few hundred dollars, and don’t mind losing a bit of brightness, this is the one to get.

Some other sweet features

The magnification range is nice, going from 1x to 6x. When using on 1x you can keep both eyes open and still see your target clearly, very handy if you’re on a long hunt and don’t want to strain your eyes.

Vortex Razor HD Gen II 1-6×24 Riflescope

Vortex Optics Razor HD Gen II 1-6x24

Most Durable and Clearest Picture

Another proper bad boy by Vortex here. This is one of my favorites on this list. It has a lot of extras other scopes don’t have and the picture you see when looking through the scope is crystal clear.

What did we like about it?

Its lens is sweet. It’s an apochromatic lens which automatically adjusts itself to optimize the spectrum of light that you see. This stops glare that comes from bright lights and eliminates the distraction this otherwise causes.

The lens is also fully multi-coated with XR plus anti-reflective coating which helps regulate the brightness to keep it at the optimum level.

The image that you get through this lens is as clear as if you were actually stood that close to your target. This is down to the level of quality of the glass. It is high density with low dispersion ensuring you get the best quality that is physically possible.

There are 11 levels of illumination and it’s easy to find your favorite as there’s an off switch next to each one. So no clicking through to number 7 every time when you go out on a hunt, just flick it on.
The sight is stress-free on your eyes due to the eye box which has quick autofocusing and allows you to use both eyes when on single magnification.

Who’s it for?

If you want the best picture possible this is the one for you. The image could not be clearer and it performs fantastically in conditions where there is a low level of light.

This is a durable, high performance, bad ass attachment. If you’re looking for the best of the best look no further.

Some other sweet features

It’s extremely durable because the exterior casing acts as a layer of protection for all the interior parts. This combined with the O-ring seal and the fact that it has been purged with argon makes this almost indestructible. It’s waterproof, fog proof and will remain fully functional in the most intense conditions.
The lens is also scratch proof and protected from oil and dirt by an Armortek coating. With single piece aircraft-grade aluminum, this has been designed to never break.
The side dial illuminates when in use so that you can see the setting you are using no matter the light conditions that you’re in.
Mounting it onto the Scar 17 is very straightforward and easy.
