7 Best Cooler For the Money Reviewed (Toughest & Coolest)

cooler

A cooler is a cooler, right? That´s what I thought, so when some buddies invited me out for a weekend camping trip, I passed by Walmart and picked up the cheapest cooler I could find.

I was in charge of dinner and drinks, so I stopped at the last gas station at the edge of town, picked up some beer and sub sandwiches, and bought a bag of ice to keep everything fresh for that evening.

Imagine the disappointment of my buddies when, once the campfire was roaring and the camp chairs set up, I opened the cooler and all I could offer was soggy sandwiches and lukewarm beer. Without a doubt, not all coolers are made alike.

Finding the best cooler for the money, which will also keep your food fresh, and beer cold takes a bit more time and research than simply making a pit stop at Walmart.

Below, we offer a concise review and complete guide of the best coolers on the market that combine a good price with great performance.

Our Top Picks At A Glance:

Extremely Affordable: Rubbermaid Extreme 5-Day Wheeled Ice Chest Rolling Cooler

Pegged at only $60.70, this highly affordable yet top performer unit is the best cheap cooler in the market. It has very thick insulation that can keep ice frozen for no less than five days. Plus, it is big enough to carry about a hundred and thirty drink cans and ice.

Since it is wheeled, it is also not too difficult to move around, whether you are using it at a party, a camping or picnic trip, and others. The portable construction also allows for tailgating without fuss. There is also durable metal, extended tow handles, and functional drain as additional features that make it a real steal.

Since there is nothing worse than trying to balance a cold drink on the uneven, rocky ground where you are camping, this great and affordable cooler also comes equipped with built-in cup holders that easily hold both 12 ounce and 20 ounce cans. Depending on how long you are planning on being away from home, this cooler comes in both 45 quart and 75 quart sizes.

If you are planning on camping in the dog days of summer, opening up your cooler for even a couple of seconds might cause significant loss of coldness and lead to melted ice. The hinged, split lid on this cooler allows you to minimize the amount of surface area exposed to the elements when opening your cooler thus helping to keep the contents of your cooler fresh and cool for a longer amount of time.

Top Features The Best Wheeled Cooler MUST Have

Naturally, your decision to buy a cooler is driven by a specific need. Wheeled coolers make it easier to take handle huge loads of food and beverages, bait, or hunting and fishing trophies.
Several determinations will help guide your purchasing decision. For instance, how many people will the cooler serve, what terrain do you intend to use it on, and how long do you need the contents kept chilled?

The Type Of Cooler

There are two main types including outdoor and indoor wheeled coolers. The outdoor varieties come designed to handle the rugged outdoor environments. These coolers come with extra-tough and larger rubber-made wheels to provide better traction. Their tires feature ridges and grips similar to what you would find on ATV tires.

Indoor wheeled coolers focus on providing a comfortable and smooth ride. They come with smaller-sized wheels often made of hard plastic or metal. The indoor coolers also tend to be smaller in size when compared to their outdoor counterparts.

It is possible to find a hybrid cooler with relatively larger wheels compared to the indoor varieties. However, these hybrids often do not perform as aggressive as the outdoor coolers when riding on rough terrains. They work well as a go-between rugged and smoother environments.
Storage Capacity and External Size

The external size should not be confused with the cooler capacity because they are not one and the same thing.

The storage capacity or load size determines whether the container can comfortably accommodate your intended load. Most products will indicate the load size of the cooling box in quarts or the number of cans it can hold.

The external dimensions determine how much space the cooler will occupy and it also affects overall mobility. While the wheeled feature can take care of the portability aspect, a larger-sized cooler takes up more space and tends to be heavier. You do not want a product that is already quite heavy when empty because it will become even more cumbersome when full.

Worth pointing out is that a cooler may feature larger external dimensions but come with a smaller internal capacity. This is identifiable by its design, and the upright models usually offer less storage space while the standard cube-shaped models come with more storage spaces.

The bottom line is that just because it appears big does not mean that it can accommodate more items.

Insulation

The primary role of a cooler-box is to keep food and beverages chilled for extended periods where conventional refrigeration is not practical. Naturally, they provide a cooling solution for outdoor conditions such as camping, hunting, hiking, and fishing. Their insulation is what provides the ability to chill desired items for as long as possible.
You can always figure out if a cooler is adequately insulated by its size. Generally, smaller sized designs do not hold ice as long as the larger sized models. In our experience, the higher-end coolers offer better insulation performance, and most can maintain temperatures below 40 ˚F with ice for up to 3 days.

Using dry ice with the right cooler can push insulation abilities for up to 10 days. However, dry ice tends to create thermal stress on the container at lower temperatures which makes it very important to go for durable models which support dry ice use.

Tow Handle

The tow handle differs from one cooler to the next, and it plays a significant role when it comes to comfortable handling. Most come with telescopic handles which allow for easy stowing away. Those that feature permanently affixed and extended handles often prove too cumbersome and make it difficult to store away.

In general, the standard cube-shaped designs will come with molded side handles. These types of handles work best for a cooler that will mostly stay in one place.

The upright types come with telescopic, collapsible tow handles. Besides the storage convenience, their retractable nature allows them to extended out to more extended heights. This feature makes it more comfortable to wheel the cooler over long distances.

Some varieties also come with handles that hinge off to one side.

Features

Some coolers come with impressive built-in accessories such as cup holders, blenders or ice crushers. Most also come with drain plugs at the front or side to get rid of liquid much easily.

A few models make use of electric cooling mechanisms. Unlike the conventional coolers, they do not need any ice, and they function much like your regular refrigerator. They need to be plugged into regular wall outlets or a car’s cigarette lighter to work. These options would be ideal for longer outdoor trips and in situations where you will have a steady power supply.

Durability

Coolers will always face a fair share of abuse, and you want one that can comfortably handle the stress. Naturally, you want an outdoor-wheeled option for use specifically in rugged conditions. These models come designed to last and feature useful elements such as pin-style hinges, rigid walls, rubber o-ring seals, larger handles, and screw-in drains.

Traditional models work best for short weekend trips and mostly for storing beverages. The higher-end models cost up to five times more, but their competing advantage is their better insulation performance and overall durability.

Extra Accessories

Bottle openers, corkscrews, removable cutting boards, speakers, removable liners, LED lights, and ceramic cutleries are some of the functional accessories that often come with coolers.

They are not essential but sweeten the deal when looking for the perfect cooler on wheels.

Price

To sum it up, it is next to impossible to find the ideal cooler that holds up well in every capacity. Likewise, they come in a diverse price range determined by their built, features, and insulation capability.

The bigger-sized models with excellent insulation abilities can handle longer trips, but they end up being quite cumbersome to haul. The highly mobile models may not hold up too well with regards to keeping items cooler for longer, but they are the most affordable.

You want to go for one that closely meets your specific needs and stays well within your particular budget. Also, have in mind that you want a product that will stand the test of time and offer an all-around value for its price.

Best Beach Coolers 2018 – Are You Still Drinking Warm Beer?

A couple of months ago, some buddies and I took a drive up the coast to a secluded beach that we had spotted a number of years ago. The idea was to take enough food (and beer) for a day of fun, relaxation and solitude. The beach was about a mile off the highway, but a small, sandy path led from the highway to the ocean. I had recently purchased one of the absolutely best coolers for camping and fishing trips and loaded it up with about a hundred cans of beer, and enough meat for a barbecue that would probably feed a small village.

What I didn´t foresee, however, was that the small wheels that came with my cooler, were not exactly made for rolling through the sand. After about a hundred feet of cursing my cooler, the sand, and everything else under the sun, I gave up on pulling the cooler, put it back into the car, and we divided the beer cans and packages of meat into our backpacks. The warm beer and not so fresh meat for the barbecue kind of ruined our outing.

While big coolers certainly can come in handy for camping trips where you only have to move the beast from your car to the picnic table, the best beach coolers combine quality performance with lightweight portability that allow you to move your stuff over sand without trouble. Below, we offer a complete review of the best beach coolers on the market today.

    What should you shop for?

The right cooler can help single-handedly jumpstart many of your future beach excursions. However, what features should it come with and what are some of the additional functions that can guarantee a fun-filled day at the beach?

It does not just end at picking an ideal beach cooler, but you must get one designed to meet most, if not all, of your outdoor cooling needs. To start with, you must decide if you need one to strictly meet single-use demands or go for a bigger option for flexibility.

The duration you foresee using a cooler box at any given instance should also guide your choice. Cold-storage boxes that can accommodate dry ice will keep your food and drinks frozen for days on end at lower temperatures.

    Type Of Cooler

Another consideration would be whether to go for a soft-sided or hard sided option or a fabric-tote style cooler. The hard-sided varieties are the iconic ice chests that most of us are accustomed to, and they work best for people who travel frequently.

The soft-sided varieties are styrofoam-made and best for one-off or infrequent use. They perform decently but often produce too much waste with time and need regular replacements.

    Terrain

The beach is filled with sand, but it also has proximity to water, direct exposure to the sun, and possibly several rugged terrains to navigate through. Outdoor coolers come recommended for the beach environment, but hybrids can get the job done just fine.

Outdoor models feature rugged designs to handle the pressure and stress of differing terrains. The picnic-style ice box can still work well over smoother surfaces.

    Volume

If you want a cooler that will hold the most items then you would get a bigger one, right? Well, not entirely because you have to figure out if the volume of the cooling box can accommodate your items and ice while still maintaining a comfortable weight. You should always go a size larger than what you may think you need.

However, you also want to consider how many people the cooler is meant to serve. A 60-quart cooler can comfortably work for a family of 5 with enough room for drinks, food, and ice. There is always room for adjustments, and you may go for a larger or smaller volume depending on your specific needs.

    Insulation

The construction of an icebox primarily determine its insulation level and consequently its ice retention abilities. You want to go for a product made using high-insulating materials.

In general, smaller sized cold-storage boxes will have poor ice retention capabilities when compared to their larger counterparts. Likewise, hard-sided models perform better than the soft-sided options when it comes to insulation.

However, metal-made cold-storage boxes conduct heat and do not perform well in warmer months. The plastic-made models work best as all-around portable ice chests.

    Toughness

Beach coolers are uniquely made to handle the abrasive stress of the sand, exposure to beach water, and the direct hit from the sun. These elements would otherwise wear down on the weak points and give the portable cooling box a short run.

Naturally, you want to carefully pay attention to the construction and materials that go into making a beach cooler. Rust and corrosion resistance are some of the desirable features you want.

Also, the material of the movable parts is equally important because it will determine the type of maintenance the cooling box needs after trips to the beach. For instance, sand from the beach could easily get stuck on the latch and hinge mechanisms and affect their seal integrity.

    Mobility

Naturally, you will get to the beach by car and then need to haul the cooler to your desired spot. It could mean a short distance from where you park your car or a long haul over a paved or sandy path. For longer distances,  you need a wheeled model that can navigate through multiple terrains.

The traditional non-wheeled options may still work, but you want to go for one with sturdy side handles. One on each side allows you to partner up and carry it to your preferred location.

    Accessibility

When at the beach, people will continuously open the cooler to grab a drink or bite to eat on a frequent basis. It means that the portable ice chest should come with a lid that is wide enough giving easy access to its contents. Sectioned and mini-access covers are also preferable.

The whole point is to limit the amount of time the lid is open which in turn reduces the amount of cold air let out of the box.

    Added Features

Besides the essential elements that any good beach cooler must come with, most will usually include a few other subtle features. They include things like built-in cup holders, bottle openers, ceramic cutleries, and raised legs.

A few of the functional features you should aim for include tow handles, an easy-drain plug, and a waterproof lid seal. These crucial elements make a difference when it comes to handling the cooler, cleaning it up, and enhancing insulation respectively.

Coolers that come with charging ports are considered a luxury, and they pretty much work as portable refrigerators. While they do not use ice cubes and keep items frozen for longer, their reliance on an electric outlet or car’s cigarette port may prove impractical in the outdoor environment. Some also come with removable Bluetooth speakers, ice crushers, LED lights, and built-in blenders which some may attribute as gimmicky additions.

You will end up drawn to some of these additional features that you deem essential to your needs.

    Budget

After going through our list of beach cooler reviews, you will have the final task of deciding which one works for your budget. The hard-sided coolers come at a higher cost compared to the soft-sided and tote options. Fortunately, it is possible to get a decent portable icebox for under $50.

It will all come down to your judgment and budget, but we say it is better to put money on a quality product that will serve you for several years.

What Are The Best Coolers on the Market Today? (Updated 2018)

Finding a quality cooler today takes a bit more effort than in earlier times. Only a couple of decades ago, a cooler was a box looking thing that kept your beer cold during a tailgating party or your milk from spoiling during a family camping trip. At worst it was made from cheap Styrofoam. At best, it was a flimsy plastic contraption that wasn’t the most attractive part of your camping setup.

    Related Articles:

Today, however, there are dozens of different coolers on the market all proclaiming to be the best model for certain activities. From coolers promise to keep your ice from melting for up to week to coolers that claim they can withstand a bear mauling, there truly is something for everyone.

In this short article, we will look the different types of coolers on the market, the most well trusted brands of coolers, and also offer a breakdown of the top ten top rated coolers.Once you have read through our ice chest reviews, we also will give you a complete buying guide so that you can find the best cooler for your needs.

Here's Our Top Picks At A Glance:

    Different Types of Coolers

It doesn't matter where you are going, on a hike or a trip to the beach, the type of cooler you need will largely depend on how you plan to use it, where you will be taking it, and what you will be storing in it. For example, if you are heading out on an overnight hike with some buddies and want to keep a few T-bone steaks cold, you obviously don’t want to be hauling around a massive 35-pound ice chest. Rather, a smaller and lighter model with a carrying strap would be much more adequate.

Similarly, if you are planning on taking your family camping in the backwoods of Glacier National Park, you will one of the toughest coolers on the market to make sure that you won ́t wake up in the morning to find your food had been stolen by raccoons, bears, or any other type of animal.

    Traditional Cooler

This cooler is what you probably remember from the time you were a kid; a rather plain, square box made from hard plastic. These types of coolers usually come with some sort of foam insulation which helps to keep things cool for a day, at most, but not much longer than that. The plastic exterior casing is usually glued to the inner foam walls which provide most of the insulation.

One of the perks of these types of coolers is that they are usually on the inexpensive end and definitely do the trick for most family camping outings, trips to the beach, or other types of activities where a nearby gas station can offer you another bag of ice to cool things down.

    High-End Cooler Models

Why would you pay four times as much for a cooler you might ask? While high-end cooler sare certainly more expensive than traditional models, they are also without a doubt much better made, more durable, much more efficient, and offer superior insulation. Instead of cheap foam for insulation, these models offer foam injected insulation that is often twice as thick.

The outside plastic shell uses a unique molding technique where in plastic is essentially melted and then made into the shape you need. For these coolers, then, the exterior plastic shell is actually a hollow inside (adding extra insulation) and has no seams whatsoever which is a big plus when it comes to stopping the escape of cool air.

Furthermore, the lids come with rubber gaskets to make a completely air tight seal. With a high-end cooler, you are pretty much taking a refrigerator with you since they will keep your food and drinks cool and preserved for several days at a time. They are great options for everything from those week-long fishing trips to a cross country drive with the kids.

    Soft and Strapped Models

The main drawback to both the traditional and high end coolers is that they are heavy and bulky. While you can pretty easily put them in a car and take them wherever you need, if you are planning on carrying them on your back, you most likely won ́t last a mile.

Soft and strapped models don’t offer the same storage capacity nor the insulation for long term storage of foods, but they are definitely more mobile and you to comfortably carry your cooler during day hikes or into the stadium.

    Brands

There are dozens of different companies manufacturing coolers of all different types, though some are definitely of higher quality than others. Here we will look at three different companies, each one best known for manufacturing one of the types of coolers we explained above.

    Coleman

Coleman is one of those companies that has been around since the days of your grandparents. In fact, you probably have a distant, stored memory of your grandpa pulling some beers out of his trusty Coleman cooler during a picnic or trip to the beach.

Since that time they have grown to one of the largest outdoor gear and camping supply companies in the world. Most of the coolers that Coleman sells are of the traditional type, though they are significantly better made than the one your grandpa used.

    Yeti

Though their coolers are much pricier than other models, the fact that they are one of the fastest growing outdoor companies gives testament to the quality of their products.

    RTIC

RTIC is another company offering high-end coolers that compare in quality to what companies like Yeti produce. RTIC claims that because of their direct marketing schemes they are able to offer high-end coolers and soft coolers of quality making for a much-discounted price.

This Houston based company does not distribute through major chains nor advertise through traditional means. Rather because of their direct marketing scheme, they are able to offer quality products that get sent directly to the consumer from the producer without any sort of middlemen.

Best Coolers on the Market Buying Guide

Before going out to purchase a new cooler, you need to make sure that you have a clear idea of what you will be using the cooler for. You will also want to make sure that it comes with a list of some of the top features that we look at below.

    • Weight: If you don’t want to be lugging around a 50 pound cooler filled with another50 pounds of food and drinks, then make sure you check out the weight of yourcooler option. If you are planning on taking your cooler by foot, say for hiking, youwill want to opt for a smaller soft cooler with straps.

    Buying Guide

Your backpack is an essential component in an enjoyable and successful outdoor experience. But remember that not all bags are created equal. The perfect hiking bag can look, feel, and function differently for everyone. When selecting the one that is best for you, there are certain aspects that you should consider. See the following factors below:

    Purpose

Keep in mind when you plan on using your backpack. If its solely for hiking then youll probably need more specific compartments for your gear as opposed to someone also wearing this backpack for a commute.

Despite the purpose, reflective detail is always important at night to help you be seen and should be considered when selecting a backpack.

    Size

There is no such thing as the perfect size when it comes to your backpack. While its great to have unlimited space for your necessities, you have to remember that you will be the one lugging it all around. Know the length of your torso - not your height - and choose a backpack appropriate for your torso length.

Your backpack should also fit you. If your bag is too large or small, it won’t sit on your body properly and can cause you discomfort. Adjust the shoulder and hip straps to have an even and stable fit that is right for you.

    Weight

Ideally, you want a light backpack, so that your gear will account for most of the weight. You may opt to get the one made from lightweight materials. To help you find the best ultralight backpack, Live Once Live Wild has compiled and reviewed all the best options available on the market today. You should definitely check it out.

    Capacity

The capacity is how much your backpack can hold measured in liters. It is an important factor because you want to have enough room to carry your supplies without sacrificing the overall weight of the backpack.

    Pack Access

Accessibility is just as important as the other factors mentioned. When buying a backpack for hiking, choose the one that will give you great access to your most important stuff. You may look for backpacks with top load openings, hip belt pockets and front pockets for easy access.

    Hydration Reservoir

Most hiking backpacks are hydration compatible, which means it has a built-in hydration system which allows the wearer to drink hands-free. When looking for a backpack to use for hiking, hydration packs are always a good option for a buyer.

    Waterproof

If you are an avid hiker who will be spending most of your time outdoors, then your rucksack should be waterproof. Nobody wants to open their bag to find wet clothes or soggy food. If your bag isnt waterproof initially, it should have the compatibility to attach a separate rain cover, protecting the contents inside.

    Ventilation

While it is important for your backpack to be waterproof, you want to make sure that there is also proper ventilation. The diverted water can leave you feeling hot, damp, and uncomfortable. You want your bag to be made out of material that will dry quickly and leave you cool. The shoulder strap and back panel should have this feature to prevent water and sweat from leaving you soggy during a hike.

    Support

Padded straps and compression straps can make or break a backpack. They can help evenly distribute the weight and pressure you feel, so you can carry it easily and have a comfortable journey. Padded hip belts can prevent soreness in your lower back and hips since around 70% of the weight sits in this area.

You may also look for bags with chest straps or sternum straps which give additional stability and help reduce jarring or tumbling of your rucksack. Both of these straps can soften the stress and preserve stability for your body during hiking.
